Bardstown is one of the oldest cities charted in Kentucky and dates back to 1790. The city was the first center of Catholicism west of the Appalachian Mountains. The Bardstown diocese served all catholics between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. Big Blue Reporters has a full-time reporter living in Bardstown and she is well versed in the city’s landscape. When scheduling a deposition, it is good to know that your court reporter will not get lost on the way and can even help you find local restaurants, hotels and watering holes.
When your depositions are over take the opportunity to learn why Bardstown is called the “Bourbon Capital of the World.” Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark and Heaven Hill all operate distilleries in the area. You can tour each facility year round and even get a few free samples. If you just happen to schedule a deposition in Septemeber, you can visit the Kentucky Bourbon Festival which runs from September 13, 2011 to September 18, 2011. The event reguarly draws 50,000 people from over a dozen countries and provides a truly unique opportunity to try bourbon in the only State in the world which is allowed to distill it.
Bardstown has a very rich history and you should take visit local attractions like My Old Kentucky Home State Park. The park is home to the Federal Hill Mansion which inspired Stephen Foster to compose My Old Kentucky Home (the song which is played before every Kentucky Derby).
You should also visit the Old Talbott Tavern which was built in 1779. The tavern, which is conveniently located across from the Courthouse, has entertained numerous historical figures including: Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, Henry Clay, John Fitch, General George Patton, Queen Marie of Romania and even Louis-Phillipe after he was exiled from France. Another famous visitor, Jesse James, left several bullet holes in the tavern after he became so drunk that he started shooting at imaginary butterflies.
