Beattyville is home to the Woolly Worm Festival which is held annually on the third weekend in October. The festival includes a weekend of music, parades, a car show and the Woolly Worm Race. Local folklore holds that Woolly the Woolly Worm can predict the severity of each coming winter based on the color of his fur. If Woolly is mostly brown in color then the winter will be mild but a mostly black coat suggests a severe winter. No analysis has been done to determine whether Woolly the Woolly Worm is a better forecaster than his arch rival, Punxsutawney Phil, but we at Big Blue Reporters strongly feel that Woolly is the better meteorologist.
Woolly doesn’t need a movie and a bunch of hype to get the weather right. Big Blue will make its winter preparations based on Woolly this year.
