Catlettsburg is the County seat of Boyd County Kentucky and sits on the border of Kentucky and West Virginia. Big Blue Reporters refused to enter West Virginia after the 2009-10 NCAA Basketball Tournament but is more comfortable after the justice done in the 2010-11 Tournament. All kidding aside, West Virginia is fine in our book but Catlettsburg is better. The city and the surrounding area is home to about 11,000 people and it is part of the Huntington-Ashland Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Catlettsburg is another Kentucky city whose history began as Americans first crossed the Appalachian Mountains. A U.S. Post Office was first opened there in 1808 and named Mouth of Sandy, Ky. Many years later, in 1849, James Fry, a prominent civil engineer of the era, was commissioned to lay out the original town of Catlett’s Burg, Kentucky(the area from 24th to Division/26th streets, and from the former Front Street to present-day Walnut Street).
The lots were quickly sold, and the community was named after its initial settlers, two brothers named Horatio and Alexander “Sawny” Catlett. The spelling of the city’s name was changed to Catlettsburg from the previous spelling of Catlett’s Burg in approximately 1895, as the United States Post Office sought to improve postage delivery service by simplifying operations with the combined name.
By the early 1900′s Catlettsburg was the largest hardwood timber market in the world as a result of its proximity to the Ohio and Big Sandy Rivers. Even as timber markets shifted, the city’s populations have remained stable with many families putting down roots that have lasted generations. Some of the oldest businesses in Catlettsburg have operated from the same location for over 130 years. Its a close knit community and its good to choose a reporting firm like Big Blue Reporters that is familiar with the area.
