The town of Hazard, as well as Perry County, is named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the famous naval leader who forced Japan to begin trading with the West and led American forces during the War of 1812. Perry is famously known for his victory report after the Battle of Lake Eerie in which he stated, “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”
Though named for an explorer who introduced Japan to the Western World, Hazard itself was long isolated from even the rest of the United States by surrounding mountains. Prior to the arrival of a railroad in 1912, the only ways in or out of the valley were 45 miles down the North Fork of the Kentucky River or a 2-week trip over the surrounding mountains.
Hazard is now a hub of commerce in Southeastern Kentucky and a major center for the coal industry. Big Blue’s court reporters are very familiar with Hazard and its many back roads. When you schedule with Big Blue you can be certain that your reporter will be on time and well prepared.
