Big Blue Reporters prides itself on being able to navigate the many back-roads Kentucky has to offer.  A stranger to Kentucky may not realize that West Liberty is actually 100 mile EAST of Liberty.  This confusion was caused by the proactive nature of West Liberty’s citizens.  Back in the 1800′s it was largely assumed that modern Pikeville would take the name of “Liberty, Kentucky”.  In deference to the larger settlement east of them, the name West Liberty was chosen for this community.  However, “Pikeville” chose another name and a different, more eastern city, took the name of Liberty. 

The proactive citizens of West Liberty kept their name geographically incorrect name anyway.  To be fair, they are west of several “Liberty’s” in other States as well as the Statue of Liberty.  The lesson here is that it is tough to predict what a Kentuckian may do, but Kentuckians stick to their decisions. West Liberty is a growing community of over 4000 and the surrounding county contains the world’s largest number of Mennonites.  West Liberty is also the global headquarters for the Mennonite church.  If you have the chance to visit West Liberty, try to schedule your visit during the last weekend of September when the city hosts the Sorgham Festival. 

Sorghum is a sweet molasses-like syrup that is grown in the area.  The festival, which attracts over 50,000 people offers insight into the Appalachian and Mennonite culture with crafts, folk art, local cuisine and other sundry items.
